Our Mission

peas in a gutter

Peas growing in an unused gutter – we use whatever we have! It saves space and costs us nothing.

Do you feel overwhelmed by all there is to know about healthy and safe living?

Do you feel frustrated with trying to source eco-conscious products?

We have often felt this way!

After many years of growing our own food, researching healthy diets and finding inspiration in sustainable living, we decided to create Saving the Green to help share this knowledge.

Our regular articles will look at new and innovative ways of growing, no matter where we live and what sort of space and experience we have. There is nothing more fulfilling than producing our own nutritious food – and it’s completely traceable!

We will look at ways of eating better; not with any restrictive diet or fad way of eating, but with delicious, nourishing and energizing foods and recipes.

We will also share with you our specially selected eco conscious products. These are products which we use ourselves and are recycled/ recyclable, made with sustainable materials and/or are ethically produced.

You don’t need to sacrifice quality to be mindful of the products you use. Join us in supporting producers for whom regenerative practices are at the very core of their companies.

For us, it is about People, Planet and Profit – in that order.

Our Leaders

Dr. Wayne Dorband

Dr. Wayne DorbandDr. Dorband has spent the past 30 years founding and directing many environmental companies, including an environmental remediation company working on restoring brownstone properties and the largest private investment fund in the world acquiring environmentally impaired properties.

He was also a professor at Augustana College, in Sioux Falls, SD and the successor to the late actor Dennis Weaver as Director of the Institute of Ecolonomics. Just one of the non-profits that Wayne is involved in, this institute serves to empower ecopreneurs to found businesses that help to regenerate the planet, while providing a viable living.

On top of all of these accomplishments, he is also a rancher of prize-winning show Alpacas and hosts many budding sustainable farming businesses and research projects on his ranch in Berthoud, Co, USA. Amazingly, he still found the time to be a husband and father to 4 grown children.

Wayne has a PhD in Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology from the University of Idaho, a MS in Marine Ecology and Aquaculture from San Diego State University, a BS in Biology from the University of California, Irvine, and an AA in Liberal Arts from Bethany Lutheran College.

Theresa Tierney

tprofile5SMHow does one write a profile that even compares to Wayne’s??!

Well, I will begin with saying that I was lucky enough to be one of the budding ecopreneurs, mentioned above, that Wayne has mentored. After many years as a web project manager, nutrition student, food safety activist and blogger, I wanted to begin a new venture to help solve some of the nagging issues that I have been trying to solve for myself.

What are the best sustainable methods of growing enough safe food for my family?

How can we be sure we are eating and living a healthy lifestyle?

How can I maintain my standard of living while making the lowest environmental impact?

I am testing out different methods of growing, eating and living that I will share with you! Wayne will be with us every step of the way with his many years of experience and background in hydroponics, aquaponics, vermiculture and sustainable agriculture.

We will also share with you specially selected products that we have sought out or created to fill the gaps in the market – effective and innovative products that allow us to grow better, eat better and live better in a sustainable way!

Theresa has a BA from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY, USA; a Diploma in Web-based Project Management from Arthouse, Dublin, Ireland and a Diploma in Training from the National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland.
